Abraham Lincoln
2/12/1809 - 4/15/1865
This carved emu egg features Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of
the United
States, assassinated in office.
Except for a term in Congress (1847-49), Lincoln's political activity
was limited to state legislation until he gained national attention
through a series of debates with Stephen A. Douglas (Democratic
senatorial candidate) in 1858.
When the Republican National Convention met in May, 1860 Lincoln secured
the nomination on the third ballot. At that time the leading
Democratic candidate was Stephan A. Douglas who had angered extreme
proslavery men by stating that the people of the territory had the right
to prohibit slavery. The Democratic party split apart. One
group nominated Douglas, another named Breckinridge and another
Bell. Lincoln won easily, but did not get a single vote from any
southern state. By the time he took office on March 4, 1861, seven
states had seceded from the Union (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas). After the Battle of Fort Sumter,
Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee followed. What
followed was the bloodiest time in U. S. history to date.
