Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard
May 28, 1818 - February 20, 1893
This carved emu egg features Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, CSA.
Beauregard graduated from West Point in 1838, fought in the Mexican
War, briefly served as supervisor of West Point in 1861, but resigned in
February of that year to accept the post of Brigadier General in the
Confederate Provisional Army.
Although
the Confederate States of America was formed on February 9, 1861, the
Civil War did not start until April 12, 1861 when this Southern general
opened fire with 50 cannons upon Fort Sumter in Charleston, S. C.
Through
a massive hoax, General Beauregard managed to fool the advancing
Federals and evacuate Corinth. While the wounded were being
removed by rail he ordered able bodied men to be issued 3 days cooked
rations and to be told that they were about to launch an all out
attack. This resulted in several cowards going over to the federal
side with the information. Scattered campfires were tended
throughout the night. Dummy cannons manned by straw soldiers were
left in the embrasures. A single band moved up and down the
deserted camp stopping at scattered points to play retreat, tattoo and
taps.
Federal
soldiers, hearing the trains coming in and seeing the number of
campfires that night were astounded the next morning when all was
quiet. The Confederate troops were gone.
After
the "Great Rebellion" Beauregard declined offers to command
foreign armies, and had a career as a railroad president as a
politician.
As you can see from this rendition of Beauregard, the artist has used
the various natural layers and shades of the emu egg as he sculpted and
carved the shell, giving great detail and depth to his
work. This egg comes with a hand turned hardwood egg stand
and can be personalized with the inscription of your choice.
Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu
egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive
addition to any decor or collection. If you are looking for a
"different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other
special occasion gift or a Civil War reenactor or history buff, a Carved
Egg by Gary Gunn™ will keep them talking about your gift for
years to come.
