Peter Mayhew took on the role of Chewbacca George Lucas needed a tall actor for the part of Chewbacca, and at 7'2", Peter Mayhew fit the bill. A former hospital employee, Mayhew's acting experience was limited. He had played the part of the minotaur in Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977), starring Patrick Wayne and Jane Seymour. However, he threw himself into the role of alien, visiting zoos and observing the behavior of many different kinds of animals. Consequently, he developed a distinctive gait for Chewbacca, and although the vocalizations were later dubbed in, he cued his fellow actors with grunts and screams during shooting. As a note of interest, the "voice" of Chewbacca was that of a brown bear.
