The Cutty Sark
This carved egg features the Cutty Sark, built for
John Willis to be the fastest clipper on the China tea route. Her design
was taken from one of his other ships "The Tweed", but special
modifications were made to make her handle better and sail faster. This
carved emu egg shows her at full sail.
Cutty Sark was launched at Dumbarton on the Clyde (England) on
November 22, 1869. She was recorded to have reached speeds of 17 and a
half knots. Her best day's run is recorded at 363 miles, an average of
15 knots per hour. On one occasion she sailed 2,164 miles in six
days and on another 3457 in eleven days.
This beautiful vessel had a long and varied history before being
retired. Currently dry-docked and cared for by the Cutty Sark
Preservation Society, she is on display at the Greenwich Pier, King
William Walk, Greenwich, London.
Our salute to the Cutty Sark comes with a hand turned wooden stand
and can become a personalized gift with an inscription on the back.
Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu
egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive
addition to any decor or collection. If you are looking for a
"different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other
special occasion gift for a clipper fan, the Cutty Sark Carved Emu
Egg would be ideal.
