Dull Knife
Wahiev (Morning Star)
1810 - 1883
These two carved emu eggs features the Northern Cheyenne Chief, Dull
Knife. The story of how Wahiev (Morning Star) got the name Dull
Knife is an interesting one. He fought a battle against a Sioux
warrior that had a tough buffalo hide shield. Wahiev's knife could
not pierce the tough hide. From that day on, the Sioux called him
Tamela Pashme - Dull Knife.
Dull Knife was born on the banks of the Rosebud River in Montana
but eventually wound up in Oklahoma. He is noted for the 1,500
mile journey on which he led his people from Oklahoma to familiar
ancestral land in Montana. They left without government consent
and had an arduous dangerous journey under fire in the quest for their
homeland. During the trip he and his followers had to eat
moccasins and sinew to survive. This as much as anything gained
them public sentiment which in turn swayed the military decision of
creating a reservation in Montana for them.
Dull Knife is buried in a cemetery next to the Northern Cheyenne
Crafts Center in Lame Deer, Montana.
Today the community college on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation,
Dull Knife Memorial College,
honors his memory.
This carved egg comes with a hand turned wooden egg stand and can
become a personalized gift with an inscription on the back.
Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu
egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive
addition to any decor or collection. If you are looking for a
"different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other
special occasion gift for a fan of Dull Knife, this carved egg would
delight them.
