Johnny Cash
February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003

"The Man in Black" started all his concerts with the simple introduction "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."  Born J. R. Cash, he took the name John R. Cash when he joined the Air Force and Johnny when he signed with Sun Records in 1955.  After several hits, he became the first artist to record a long playing record at Sun.  He eventually followed Elvis Presley's example and left the small label.  In 1958, he signed with Columbia where he recorded "Don't Take Your Guns to Town."

Although Cash was never in prison, he was arrested on seven different occasions, once for picking flowers on private property.  If you found Johnny Cash picking flowers in your yard in the middle of the night, would you call the police?

From 1969 to 1971 he hosted The Johnny Cash Show on  ABC.  His popularity began to wan in the mid-seventies, although he continued to have successful tours.  Over the following years he recorded with a number of different labels and  collaborated with many other performers.  In the 1990's his career took an upswing and although he was not sought after by major labels, he found new fans among the younger generations.  Cash and wife June made several appearances on the hit TV show, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Cash did a cameo in the Simpsons, playing Homer's coyote spirit guide.   Cash wrote two autobiographies.  Man in Black was published in 1975 and Cash: The Autobiography came out in 1995.  In 1986, Cash published his only novel, Man in White, a book about Saul and his conversion to become the Apostle Paul.

June Carter Cash died of complications following heart valve replacement surgery on May 15, 2003 at the age of 73.  Less than four months after his wife's death, Johnny Cash died at the age of 71 due to complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure.
