There are nearly 60 species of kangaroo, all found on the islands of Australia and New Guinea. The different species are covered with a soft woolly fur that can be blue, grey, black, yellow, brown or red. Life expectancy in the wild is roughly 6 years, but in captivity they may live 20. Kangaroo are herbivores and swallow their food whole, regurgitating and chewing cud much like a cow. The largest kangaroo is the Red Kangaroo which may be 6 feet tall and weigh 300 pounds. The comfortable hopping speed for this large marsupial is 13 to 17 miles per hour, but it can travel over 40 miles per hour and leap over 30 feet in one hop. Adult males are called bucks, boomers or jacks. Adult females are called does, flyers, roos or jills. A baby is called a joey, no matter what the sex is. A group of kangaroos are called a mob. Joeys are born hairless and blind. They are around 2.5 cm long. After being born they crawl up the hair on their mothers to find and enter her pouch. Inside the pouch, they immediately attach themselves to a teat and suckle. They may live in their mothers pouch until they are 7 or 8 months old, getting out occasionally to browse, but always returning when frightened. The mother has 4 teats in the pouch, each providing milk specific to the age of the joey. She may have several different ages in the pouch at one time. This carved egg comes with a hand turned wood egg stand and can become a personalized gift with an inscription on the back. Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive addition to any decor or collection. If you are looking for a "different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other special occasion gift for an marsupial enthusiast, this could be the perfect gift. Note: remember that any pet can be carved on an emu egg, the artist just needs a photo of it. |
