Prior to her birth, Marilyn and her mother were abandoned by her father. The succession of relationships her mother went through confused the child and when her mother gave her the name "Baker" (a man she dated prior to Mortensen) it didn't help matters.  Because of her mother's mental illness Marilyn grew up in orphanages, foster homes and at age 16 made the first of her three marriages, to Jimmy Dougherty, in 1942. The marriage lasted 4 years.  By this time Marilyn was modeling swim suits and had bleached her hair blonde.  In 1946, divorced and a seasoned swim suit model - now with bleached blonde hair, Marilyn signed a contract with Fox Studios.  In the course of her career, she worked for Fox, Columbia, United Artists and MGM.  She made only 30 movies and did modeling in-between movies until her career took off. Marilyn's career took an upswing after the first issue of Playboy Magazine came out - she was the first centerfold (they reprinted a calendar photo of her)

She married twice more, first to Joe DiMaggio (lasted 8 months) and later Arthur Miller (4 years).

Despite the success of her movies, work for Marilyn was slowing down because she showed up late for work too much.  On August 5, 1962 she was found face down on her bed, nude, the victim of an overdose of sleeping pills.  She apparently died the night before.  She was 36 years old.
