Medicine Crow Carved Emu Egg

Medicine Crow
Perits-Shinakpas
1848 -

This carved emu egg features Medicine Crow, a warrior of the Apsaroke (Crow).

Surrounded by aggressive Sioux, Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Arapaho, the Crow had allied themselves with white fur traders and thrived as middlemen between them and other Indian tribes.   Over the years, they provided military assistance, helped to protect travelers on the Bozeman Trail, and scouted for both Custer and Crook.

Like Chief Plenty Coups, Medicine Crow had a vision regarding the passing away of the buffalo and the coming of many white men.  Medicine Crow bought "medicine" (an object supposed to give great power over natural or magical forces) in the form of a preserved hawk from another man.  He wore this as a part of his headdress.  In battles against the Nez Perce, Arapaho and Sioux, he led 10 successful war-parties, killed at least 3 men, captured 5 guns, several horses and had many coups.    During battle, he had two horses shot out from under him.  He also has the distinction of having "thrown away" 6 wives.  Medicine Crow fought on the side of the white man twice, against the Nez Perce in Chief Joseph's retreat and against the Sioux when Sitting Bull led them to Canada.  Medicine Crow was not just a warrior, he was an artist.  During a trip to Washington, he visited the Washington Zoo and many of his pencil sketches of the animals still exist today.

This carved egg comes with a hand turned wooden egg stand and can become a personalized gift with an inscription on the back.

Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive addition to any decor or collection.  If you are looking for a "different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other special occasion gift for a fan of Medicine Crow, this carved egg would delight them.
