Nathan Bedford Forrest carved emu egg

Nathan Bedford Forrest
July 13, 1821 - October 29, 1877

This carved egg features Nathan Bedford Forrest, one of the military geniuses of American history, enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 as a private, raised and equipped a mounted battalion at his own expense, and was appointed lieutenant colonel. Had he been born of a wealthy family instead of a poor one, and been afforded the opportunity to attend West Point, there is no doubt he would have played a larger role in the conflict.  Uneducated but not illiterate, Nathan Bedford Forrest was a natural tactician who earned the praise of his enemies.  Prior to WWII, his campaigns were studied closely German field marshal, Erwin Rommel.

He served with distinction at Fort Donelson, opposed the decision to surrender it, and proved the error of the decision by leading his cavalry and a number of infantry out of the area without a shot being fired at him.

He was a colonel in the Battle of Shiloh and was severely wounded during the retreat when he charged and routed a line of Union skirmishers by himself in defense of the retreating rebel army.

Forrest became a brigadier general in July 1862. From then until the end of the war he and his cavalry harried the Union lines of communication and supply, delivering surprise attacks on isolated garrisons.

As you can see from this rendition of Forrest, the artist has used the various natural layers and shades of the emu egg as he sculpted and carved the shell, giving great detail and depth to his work.  This egg comes with a hand turned hardwood egg stand and can be personalized with the inscription of your choice.

Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive addition to any decor or collection.  If you are looking for a "different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other special occasion gift or a Civil War reenactor or history buff, a Carved Egg by Gary Gunn™  will keep them talking about your gift for years to come.
