Nicolas is the third son of Professor August Coppola and Joy Vogelsang, a dancer-choreographer and was born January 7, 1964.  Director Francis Ford Coppola is his uncle. 

He hated school so much he decided to take the G. E. D. exam in the 11th grade, passed, got his certificate and landed a part as a surfer on a TV series called The Best of Times (1980-81).   His movie debut was Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

Since then he has appeared in numerous films in a variety of roles ranging from a love struck butcher to a number of different criminals, suicidal alcoholics, and an FBI agent.
