Oprah was born in Kosciusko, MS and reared by her Grandmother on a farm until she was six.  From age six to thirteen she lived with her Mother in Milwaukee.  Abused and molested, Oprah ran away from home.  Eventually she was sent to live with her Father in Nashville.  Vernon Winfrey was strict.  He would accept nothing less than her best.  

Five years later she was hired by a radio station in Nashville and launched her career in broadcasting.  Over the years she has been a reporter, co-anchor and co-host on various TV stations.  She also found time to attend college where she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts.  

Oprah came to Chicago in January 1984 to host "AM Chicago," a faltering local talk show. In less than a year, Oprah made it the hottest show in town. The format was expanded to one hour and it was renamed "The Oprah Winfrey Show." That was the same year "The Color Purple" brought her to the nation's attention.

Oprah Winfrey became the first woman in history to own and produce her own talk show when HARPO Productions assumed ownership and production responsibility for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in October, 1988.
