Rain in the Face was not a
hereditary chief; he earned his reputation during the Lakota wars of the
1860’s. When the peace treaty was
signed in 1868 giving all the country north of the Republican River in Nebraska,
including the Black Hills and the Big Horn Mountains to the Sioux, Rain in the
Face and others were not satisfied, but waited.
Gold was discovered on the reservation.
As white men began coming into the Black Hills, Rain in the Face and
other young men began lying in wait for the trespassers, and would kill them
all. It was during this time that
he and another Indian killed a white soldier.
Somehow this information was leaked to the army and Rain in the Face was
arrested by Tom Custer (George A. Custer’s brother).
With the help of a white guard he escaped.
Eventually he joined a hostile camp on the Powder River and began
harrying the Northern Pacific Railroad, who had been granted permission to cut
across Indian lands by the U. S. government.
In the spring he joined what was later referred to as the largest group
of Sioux ever assembled. Following the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Rain in the Face accompanied Sitting Bull to Canada. He returned with him to the United States in 1881.
