"Kenen ääni
ensimmäisenä kaikui tässä maassa? Ääni oli punaisen kansan, jolla oli vain jousia ja
nuolia... Se mitä maassani on tehty ei ole
minulle mieleen, sitä en ole pyytänyt; valkoiset ihmiset kulkevat maani
halki...
Kun valkoinen mies tulee maahani, niin hän jättää verivanan... Minulla on
tässä maassa kaksi vuorta - Black
Hills -vuoret ja Big Hornin vuori. Minä haluan, ettei Suuri Isä rakenna teitä niiden kautta. Minä olen sanonut nämä asiat kolme kertaa; nyt olen tullut tänne sanomaan sen heille neljännen kerran."
"Whose voice was first sounded on this land? The voice of the red
people who had but bows and
arrows . . . What has been done in
my country I did not want, did not ask for it; white people going through my country. . . . When the white man comes in my country he leaves a trail of blood behind him. .
I have two mountains in that country- The Black Hills and the Big Horn Mountain. I want the great father to make no roads through them. I have told these things three times; now I have come here to tell them the fourth
time."

Note: Photographers
tried very hard to get Red Cloud to pose for them each time he came to
Washington. Finally on June 9, 1875 he agreed to allow the
photographer to take his picture - but only if he was first paid
$25.00. |
Mahpiua Luta
"Red Cloud"
1822 -1909
Oglala Lakota
This carved emu egg honors Mahpiua Luta, or Red Cloud. Red
Cloud was not a hereditary chief but emerged as a natural leader and
spokesman of his people. He was born on the Platte River in
Nebraska Territory in 1822.
In 1864 John Bozeman tried to establish a shortcut between the
Oregon Trail at Fort Laramie and the gold camps recently opened in
western Montana. The Bozeman Trail violated the home and hunting
grounds of the Sioux. Red Cloud led his people in resisting the
army's efforts to establish forts and a road through this area.
The battles fought along the trail were among the most devastating of
any during the Plains Indian Wars. The two year harassment did not end
until the U. S. agreed to abandon all posts and road work. It is
reported that the troops pulled out of Fort Phil Kearny were not even
out of sight before the fort was burned to the ground.
Red Cloud signed the Second Treaty of Fort Laramie on April 29, 1868 and
allowed himself to be settled on the Red Cloud Agency in Nebraska.
In 1878 he and his people moved to Pine Ridge Agency where he died on
December 10, 1909. During his time at Pine Ridge he made several
trips to Washington, D. C. to publicize his views and criticize the U.
S. Government's treatment of his people.
This carved egg comes with a hand turned wooden egg stand and can
become a personalized gift with an inscription on the back.
Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu
egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive
addition to any decor or collection. If you are looking for a
"different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other
special occasion gift for a fan of Red Cloud, this carved egg would
delight them.
