Nichelle Nichols as Nyota Upenda Uhura carved emu eggNichelle Nichols
December 28, 1933

This carved emu egg features one of the sexiest ladies in show business, Nichelle Nichols, shown here in her role as the Star Trek Communications Officer, Nyota Upenda Uhura.

Nichelle was born in Robbins, IL on December 28, 1933.  While this sultry star is best know for her ground breaking role on the 60's television series, Star Trek, she is also an accomplished singer, dancer and writer.  Visit your favorite bookstore to purchase her biography or one of her science fiction novels.

The Star Trek television show broke new ground in many ways - women were portrayed as liberated, the equal of the men they worked with.  Racial prejudice was non-existent as were many diseases and other social problems.  The show dealt with issues of the day and always had a message.  Unfortunately, NBC was not really interested in social commentary, or equal opportunity for women or blacks.   Although Nichelle was signed to a contract to play the number four lead, NBC refused to honor it, forcing Gene Roddenberry (with whom she had an affair) to hire her on a daily basis.  This he did for the duration of the show.  Add to this treatment Nichelle's disillusionment with her role's lack of development (and a few other things) and it's easy to understand why she considered leaving the show.  Fortunately for fans, she met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a party the day she decided to leave the show and he changed her mind.

Nichelle Nichols and William Shatner were credited with the first interracial screen kiss, but NBC felt it would be too radical to show their lips meeting so Nichelle had to turn her head slightly and Shatner's lips hit her cheek instead.  Perhaps if her skin had been green instead..........

The Nyota Uhura Carved Emu Egg can become a personalized gift with an inscription on the back and comes with a hand turned hardwood egg stand.

Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive addition to any decor or collection.  Whether you are looking for a distinctive housewarming gift, birthday present or other special occasion gift, this carved egg would be a wonderful surprise for any Star Trek fan who already "has everything".
