Carved emu egg saluting Willie NelsonWillie Hugh Nelson
Born April 30, 1933, (Abbott or Fort Worth?) Texas

These commissioned emu eggs feature American icon Willie Nelson.

When I first heard he got his start playing in a Czech polka band, I had to stop and think about it for a minute.  Ok.  I can see that, interesting visual……

After all these years I guess I should not be surprised at anything I find out about this American icon.  He spent the 1960’s writing songs that made other singers stars while his own singing career was directed by record labels intent on pigeonholing him in the pop/country field.  He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1965 and had a series of top 40 hits, but nothing like what he was accomplishing for other artists.  His creativity stifled by the record factory environment of Nashville, coupled with his Nashville home burning down, he headed back to his roots in Texas in the early 1970’s.  It was about that time he also quit cutting his hair.

This was a time of growth for Willie.  No longer stifled by commercialism, he explored many avenues of music and consequently it became hard to label the type of music he played.  He combined early country, rock, pop, jazz, folk, Western swing and honky-tonk, delivered it in a delicious weathered tenor and had people loving it.  No matter what kind of music you liked, whether you were a college professor or a truck driver, he was bound to have at least one song that you loved.  The media labeled the hybrid sound “outlaw country.”  By 1979 he was an established star.

In the 1980’s he launched a new career as a movie actor and did a number of duets with various artists.  Farm Aid, launched in 1985, criticized US farm assistance policy and  brought attention to the plight of the American farm families.  The late 1980’s brought an IRS investigation.

In 1990 the IRS auctioned off everything he owned, leaving him with the clothes on his back and little else.  “Who’ll Buy My Memories” (the IRS tapes) were hawked on TV with all profits going to the IRS bill.  Willie turned 60 in 1993, debt free and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He revived his music career with “Across the Borderline” and followed up with “Moonlight Becomes You”.  At age 70, he is continuing to play concert dates across the country, as well as a mean game of golf.

Either of the Willie Nelson Carved Emu Eggs comes with a hand turned hardwood stand and can become a more personalized gift with an inscription on the back.

Because of the variations of color and texture inherent in the emu egg itself, each carved egg will be unique and make a distinctive addition to any decor or collection.  If you are looking for a "different" housewarming gift, birthday present or other special occasion gift for fan of Wailing Willie, this carved emu egg will delight them.
